Description:

These are the worlds oldest recorded dirty jokes. They come from a box of wax cylinders labled "Not for mixed company!" that is located at the Edison National Historic Site in East Orange, New Jersey. The ENHS was formerly Edison Laboratories, built in 1888 after Edison moved from Menlo Park, New Jersey. It is now run by the National Parks department. This is where the world's first recording studio was located. The Superintendent of the site is Maryanne Gerbaukas. In 2002, at the request of Ms. Gerbaukas and sound curator Jerry Fabris, I secured a grant of $56,000.00 from then MP3.com CEO Michael Robertson for an Archeophone, a high tech recording device used to transfer 100 year old cylinder recordings into digital form. When I secured this grant, Mr. Fabris promised, among other things, that he would make the transfers of the rest of the cylinder in this box available to me so that I could make them available to the world. Ms. Gerbaukas will not allow this for fear that Edison's voice might turn up on the cylinders of the dirty jokes and his image and reputation might be damaged. This is censorship by the government and a violation of the Freedom Of Information Act. It is also a violation of the conditions of the grant made by the MP3.com foundation. If you would like to hear the rest of these jokes please post comments here and contact the Edison National Historic Site at 973.736.0550 and your government officials. It is not the governments business to control our history. Thank you, Michael J. Loughlin(The first joke is about President Grover Cleveland and his mistress Francis Folsom, comparing them to two ships colliding in the night!)

to those who own an edison phonograph, for example my self, you get used to the blurred speech. The record is in excellent condition for the time, but is the film real?

Absolutely it is a wax recording, TGOM. I've made wax recordings. I know the sound. Also, the diction of the man is typical of "declamatory" of that period. The recording needs a printed transcription for us to follow. The distortions of the glass recording diaphram then used make it hard to follow the voice. I once recorded people on brown wax blanks. One of them was the entertainer, Tiny Tim. Anyway, the recordings you offer are historic and should be heard.
